Breakout Session #1a:

“Legislation: What’s Happening In Olympia”

This session will focus mostly on Washington State legislation–progress on what passed in 2019 and 2020, and what’s expected to be seen in 2021.

Breakout Session #1b:

“Creative Strategies for Communicating and Demonstrating Waste Reduction in Action”

Changing the collective mindset about waste is a significant challenge! Presenters in this session will share with you their unique programs and experiences that help transform “waste” into “resources”.

Breakout Session #1c:

“Oregon’s Secondary MRF Study/ Washington Market Updates/ NextCycle”

Pacific Northwest recycling processors and end markets discuss current and projected market trends and capacity; we will explore the results of the Oregon’s secondary MRF study and how this research may impact Washington; and Bryce Hesterman with RRS dives into NextCycle, a program designed to recover, renew and revive recycling end markets.

“Legislative: The Big Picture”

Where is legislation headed in Washington, Oregon, Califionia, B.C. – the World? How will Climate Change drive legislation? EPR, Basel Plastic Ban, Mexico’s proposed EPR plan, Bottle deposits.

 

Breakout Session #2b:

“Reduce, reuse, recycle, RESEARCH”

Learn how Washington and Oregon waste reduction educators are using various types of research to inform the development of recycling contamination reduction and waste prevention campaigns. Presenters from Oregon DEQ, Metro, Washington Department of Ecology, C+C and King County Consortium, will share research insights and discuss the messages and strategies they have developed to support behavior change and reach new audiences

 

Breakout Session #2c: 

“Working toward Zero Food Waste”

Food waste is a significant part of our waste stream and represents a significant waste of natural resources when we lose its value to the landfill. From commercial kitchens, to school cafeterias or the entire state of Washington, come hear how our partners are preventing the loss of food.

Is Washington ready for a bottle bill? This session will explore arguments on both sides.

Breakout Session #3b:

“An EPR Model for Washington”

Extended Producer Responsibility exists in many forms. This session showcases an EPR model that was designed to ensure sustainable funding and increase the residential recycling rate in Washington State.

Breakout Session #3c:

“Shining a light on Rural Recycling”

Join us as we explore the challenges and advantages unique to rural recycling programs throughout Washington. Speakers from across the state will shine a light on their program’s successes and struggles.

“Contamination Reduction 20/20”

Washington municipalities and organizations will divulge their contamination reduction strategies in an exciting and fast paced Pecha Kucha (20×20) style presentation! Join us for an information-download like no other.

 

Breakout Session #4b:

“Packaging Challenges and Industry’s Journey towards Sustainable Packaging”

The Sustainable Packaging Coalition, More Recycling, and The Recycling Partnership convene to present on the current challenges facing sustainable packaging. Speakers will discuss the role of plastics, alternative matierals, and how the Packaging Industry is looking at the road ahead.

 Breakout Session #4c:

“Surveying a Changing Situation/ Tools and Tips for a Cleaner Recycling Stream”

The Recycling Partnershp, Zero Waste Washington ,and Washington State Department of Ecology share their results and reports from surveying Pacific Northwest municipalities on past, present and future projections of recycling lists and changes to programs. In tandem, Waste Managment will highlight innovative new tools to reduce recycling contamination by working with businesses and multifamily customers.
