First – we are definitely not “doing what we have always done” this year – pay extra close attention to the conference details, as many of the things you have known to “always be a certain way” have changed in 2024. Just a few of the changes to watch out for:

  • Our conference does not flow over a weekend at all this year! The welcome reception is a Tuesday evening, our closing Gala is on Thursday evening, and there is no programming on Friday morning.
  • Tours will be pre-conference this year! They will take place on Tuesday – leaving the hotel at 11:00am and returning in time for the Welcome Reception
  • Golf will also be pre-conference this year! It will take place on Tuesday and conclude in time for the Welcome Reception – and it’s going to be entirely different – it will be at an indoor golf experience – and you don’t even have to golf to join and have a great time!
  • Our educational offerings have expanded by over 30% – that’s right, there are more than 1/3 more sessions to participate in this year than ever before!
  • We are also offering “group registrations” for agencies. If your agency would like to pay for 10 registrations all at once and then assign names later to simplify payments and travel requests. You will then get the matching number of registration coupons so that individuals can register themselves and include the details. If you are interested, please contact the office at recycle@wsra.net.

Just a Few of the Topics to Expect in Our Educational Sessions: Organics Law Implementations Plans; Workforce Demand & Hiring Challenges; Innovations in Plastics; Packaging Policy; PFAS Removal; Legislative Recap; Responsible Recycling; Carton Recycling; and many more!

Keynote Speaker:

Heidi Sanborn

Heidi is the founding Director of both the California Product Stewardship Council, National Stewardship Action Council, and the Stewardship Action Foundation. With over 33 years’ experience being a leader in the solid waste industry, Heidi is the nation’s foremost expert on extended producer responsibility and circular economy.

Heidi has worked as a regulator, advocate, and consultant, aiding local governments in compliance with waste management laws. While serving as a regulator at CalRecycle, she was promoted to the position of Policy Advisor to the Chair and led the charge to get the goal of zero waste using product stewardship into the strategic plan. She has led the way organizing local governments to advance for making the producers have a fair share of the responsibility for the end-of-life impacts and costs of their products which pushed the California legislature to pass more Extended Producer Responsibility legislation than in any other state including paint, mercury thermostats, pharmaceuticals and sharps, and packaging with SB 54 in 2022. She is not only an expert in policy, but in program implementation and regularly keynotes at national and international conferences.

Heidi is a Board member of the California Foundation on the Environment and the Economy (CFEE) and started the “Recycling Challenge” study trips, which takes labor, business, local government and environmental leaders with elected officials to other states and countries to have solutions-oriented and nonpartisan dialogues. In her personal time, Heidi is an elected Board Member representing Ward 7 on the Sacramento Municipal Utility District Board. Ms. Sanborn is a self-described “utility geek”.

Student Grant Program:

The Washington State Recycling Association (WSRA), a statewide nonprofit committed to promoting and advancing waste reduction practices and policies in the Northwest and beyond, is now accepting applications for a scholarship to attend its annual conference. These scholarships are available to higher education students, AmeriCorps volunteers, and professionals new to the industry. This conference is an outstanding opportunity for future leaders to network with waste reduction professionals, expand their knowledge of the recycling and waste reduction industry, and prepare themselves for a career in a rewarding and innovative field. The scholarship covers the cost of hotel accommodations during the conference, educational sessions and networking opportunities, connection with a professional in the industry and WSRA membership dues for the remainder of 2024. Assistance with transportation to the conference will also be evaluated.

Conference Tours:

We anticipate adding at least one more tour this year – but we already have two!

Centralia Water Treatment Plant:

One of the tours will visit the Centralia Wastewater Treatment Plant and see pre-treatment, composting, and sustainability practices!

Dirt Hugger:

One of the tours will visit Dirt Hugger’s main processing facility and tour all elements of the process used at their modern facility!

Conference Awards:

Know of a Recycling Superstar? Or an Impressive Waste Reduction Program? Tell Us About Them!

Each year the WSRA recognizes people, businesses, programs and organizations that demonstrate innovation and leadership in the field of waste reduction and recycling in Washington state. Now is the time to apply! Award winners are showcased at the annual conference in May.

Silent Auction:

WSRA will once again be holding our silent auction. It is thank you to our amazing support from partners and conference participants that our silent auction generates funds that helps keep costs low (or free!) for our education and networking events throughout the year. Please be thinking now about what you might be able to contribute to the silent auction!

We will also again be holding a raffle – with the top prize being two round trip tickets on Alaska Airlines plus a one-week stay at a location that will be revealed in May! You wont’ want to miss it!

Financial Assistance Program for WSRA Conference

This year the WSRA Equity Committee is providing free conference registration to a limited number of applicants with the goal of reducing financial barriers for those who are unable to afford it. We hope this will allow our conference to expand and include an even more diverse audience of recyclers in Washington! Applications are due March 1st. Please help us spread the word and share this opportunity with your networks.

This program is in addition to the Student Guest program. The Student Guest program provides conference registration, lodging, and mentorship to a small cohort of college students, similar to previous years. Keep an eye out in our upcoming newsletters for an announcement about that application coming soon!

Trashion Show:

What would the WSRA Conference be without the Trashion Show? Be on the lookout – we will need volunteers to model!
